Kenalog is a cortico-steroid injection, which gives relief by reducing the symptoms caused by the immune system's response to the pollen. It contains triamcinolone acetonide, which belongs to a group of medicines called cortico-steroids (steroids).

Kenalog is officially licensed for the treatment of severe hay fever in the UK, but it's only available in private clinics.

As with all medicines there's a potential of side-effects. Common side effects may include stomach pains and bloating, nausea, headache, dizziness and skin changes such as itching or a scaly rash.

Less common and more rarely experienced side effects can include excessive sweating, changes in menstrual periods, increased blood pressure, increased blood sugar, thromboembolism and weight gain might be noted. Fat atrophy (loss of fatty tissue in a localised area of the body that can cause pitting, scarring and bumps), adrenal suppression (where your body doesn't produce enough hormones), fluid retention, heart failure and hypertension.

Once administered the medication will suppress the excessive inflammatory response associated with hay fever. A single injection can provide relief for a whole hay fever season, although duration and efficacy varies with each client.

Kenalog - hay fever injections shouldn't be regarded as a first line treatment.

Not everyone is able to have this injection:

- If you are under 18 or over 70
- If you have or recently had cancer
- Glaucoma
- Taking medication that could interfere with Kenalog (steroid)
- If you have type 1 diabetes or medicated type 2 diabetes
- Have poorly controlled high blood pressure or other heart problems
- Diagnosed with Osteoporosis
- Pregnancy or breast feeding
- Current infection or recent exposure to an infection
- Epilepsy
- Allergy to Kenalog or any of its contents.

Under current COVID 19 guidance clients must acknowledge that the use of steroids will decrease their immune response. This can make fighting the COVID 19 virus more difficult. As a consequence, we strongly recommend you first try decongestants and minimise your exposure to pollen.

In keeping with current COVID 19 guidance, any person who is shielding, high risk or presenting with COVID symptoms is not eligible for injection.

The injection is a single or double dose of Kenalog (40mg / 80mg). This depends on the severity of symptoms or size of the person. All hay-fever injections are administered in the gluteal muscle. No more than two single or double dose injections are recommended within a 12 month period.

Kenalog - hay fever relief injections are given intramuscularly (IM) - into a muscle. Intramuscular injections typically have better results. Kenalog is injected directly into the muscle, which is then absorbed by the surrounding muscle immediately.

The injection will be placed into the gluteal muscle of the buttock (upper, outside region). It's a quick and easy injection, and relatively painless. For ease of injecting, we ask you to wear something you can pull down slightly from the waist to expose the injection site.

Once the injection is administered, the effects can last for a minimum of three weeks, with many people experiencing relief from symptoms that exceed this. Usually one dose of the Kenalog injection, equivalent to 40mg triamcinolone acetonide, is enough.

Results do vary from person to person, and can depend on how your body metabolises the steroid, and the varying allergen count, which is changeable throughout the season.

The total cost of a Kenalog - hay fever injection is £75 for 40mg and £120.00 for 80mg. There are no additional consultation fees.

The dosage depends on your weight and severity of symptoms.
